Born: 4-Apr-1890 Died: 12-Nov-1973 Spouse: Cora Louise Miller Children: Harriet Crystal Elvy, Wilma Jean Elvy, Edna Phillis Elvy, Ludford William Elvy Ludford was born in 1890 in Arnold's Oak or in Eastlin, England (according to different family members), and baptised in Ospring. Lud had no schooling beyond about the fifth or sixth grade because of the need on the farm: his father removed him from school to go with him to cut down trees and pack the wood home on their backs. In 1908 when Lud was aged 18, Edmund Elvy, his cousin, invited his family to come to America on the Lusitania, and planned to leave all his money to Lud. They then went by train west to Los Angeles, California, and then on to Weed, California. From there they went by horse-drawn wagon to reach the family homestead in Siskiyou County, California, near the Oregon border where they settled, raised wheat and improved the property. Lud later worked in a cabinet shop in Sebastopol, California, where his wife Cora had been born and reared, and he loved to garden. Edmund married Alice late in life and his widow apparently took the fortune, leaving Lud only $1,000 instead of the intended $84,000. Alice Elvy then gave it all to her nephew, a lawyer, back East. |
