Occupation: William James started his binding as Waterman apprentice on 11 November 1824 when he was 14 years of age. His master was Samuel Monk. William James was freed as Waterman 7 years later on 12 April 1832 when he was 21. Between the years of 1852 and 1860 he was master to his first born son who had entered Waterman apprenticeship. His third son also followed this line, but William could not be his master as it was only permitted to be master to one apprentice at a time.
Comments: William Squire was born in East Stonehouse, Devon. He was baptised on 6 October 1810.
Whilst an apprentice for Waterman, his name is recorded as Squires. He probably changed this around 1833 when his first son was born because his son is recorded as Squire on the birth certificate, with the trailing 's' having been crossed out. It is also interesting that for the Census of 1841 he gives his name as William but by the time of the Census of 1851 he gives his name as James.
