The Last Will and Testament of Edmund Elvey (30 June 1609)

In the name of God Amen.
I Edmonde Elvey of the parrishe of Throwley in the
County of Kent Taylor being sike in body and sounde
in minde doe make my last will and testament in manner
and forme following. First of all I give and bequeath my soule
into the hands of Christ my redeemer by whose blessed
merrits alone I have to be saved. Next I recommend my
body to the Earth and to be burned within the church
yard of Throwley. I make Ann Elvey my wife my
sole executriss of this my laste will and testament and
all matters to be ordered by her as followeth. Itm. I
give to Thomas Elvey mine eldest sonne a feather bed a
bedsted all things belonging to it and fowre payres of sheets
to enjoye it one and twenty years of age. Itm. I give to
him likewise a (greate brath pott yoating tonne) my
skrie (scythe?) my bushell1 my plowe and all the appurtenance
thereunto. Itm. I give unto him two stocks of bees to be
kept for him in the place where they nowe stande. And at
the age of fifthene years to receyve the profitt of them.
Item. I give unto him a yong cowe and half a score
of ewe sheepe to be delivered unto him when he comes
to the age of one and twenty. Itm. I give to my
sonne Edmund Elvey thirtye pounds in money to be payd
him when he commes to the age of one and twentith
Itm. I give unto him a stock of bees to be sett at
the lower housse And he to have the profitt of them outof
hand and soe to be kepte till he come to the age of
one and twentith. Itm. My will is the preacher shall
make a sermon at my funerall and for the same I
bequeath him 6 sh. 8 d. Itm. To 4 poore men that
carry me to church I give 12 d. a peece. Itm. To
tenne poore folkes 4 d. a peece. Itm. All my moveable
goodes wothin doores and wothout I give to my wife
Anne Elvey paying my legacies and funerall charges.
And as touching my lands. Item. I give unto Thomas
Elvey mine Eldest sonne my housse where I nowe dwelle
joyned to Clays Fostall called Cignette with all out-
houses orchards and forty acres of land
thereonto belonging and have it when he comes to
the age of one and twentith years. Itm. I will
that Anne Elvey my wife shall have the pro-
fitt of it till he comes to the age of one and twentith
years paying him att the age of 16 yeares forty Shillings
a yeare. Itm. I will that Anne Elvey my wife
shall repayre the housse and plante the orchard
Itm. I give to Anne Elvey my wife when my sonne
Thomas comes to the age of one and twentith years out of my
land given and bequeathed to my sayd sonne
Thomas fower powndes a yeare during the terme of
her life to be payd every halfe yeare at the feast of
the annunciacion2 of the virgin Mary and Michaell the arch-
angell by even and equall periods. Item. This land soe bequeathed
to Thomas my sonne I give to him and his heires forever
Itm. I give to Edmond Elvey my sonne the lower
housse the barn and all outhouses and twenty acres
of land more or less belonging unto it laying and
being within the parish of Throwley when he shall
come to the age of one and twentith yeares. Itm.
I will that Anne Elvey my wife shall have all the
profitt of the land keeping of him to whole untill
he comes to 14 yeares. Itm. I will that my
wife keepe the reparations of the housse and barne
and to plante an orchard till he comes
to the age of one and twentith. Itm. I will that
this land so given to my sonne Edmond should
be given to him and to his heires for ever. And
if either of my two sonnes dye before the other my will
is my surviving sonne should be the heire of the other.
Itm. My will is my wife Anne out of the sayd low-
er house and land given to my sonne Edmond when
he comes to the age of one and twentith yeares should
receyve during her naturall life out of the sayd
house and land twenty shillings a yeare. Itm. My
will is my sonne Edmond shoude receive twenty
shillings a yeare when he comes to the age of fifteene
yeares. These woorde inter/med "my wife, during the
terme of her life, during her naturall life, the land",
were written at the witnessing and sealing hereto dated
the thirtith of June in the year of the raygne
of our Soveraygne Lord James of England
