Jan Arthur Goossens was born in Zevenbergen (Netherlands), son of a Belgian father from Ghent who was a Civil and Chemical Engineer and Director of a sugar factory.   His mother came from Roosendaal in the county of Noord Brabant in the Netherlands.  During World War I, Jan opted to gain the nationality of his mother.  He wanted to become medical doctor but due to circumstances he became businessman.  He married three times and from each wife received a son and a daughter.
