It appears that Frederick and Elizabeth Grimwood had no financial difficulties as they appear to have received payments for licence fees for a patent that Reuben, Elizabeth's first husband, had developed with a partner. During the first years of their marriage the financial situation was such that it was not necessary for Frederick to earn money. However in 1906 he started work as a gardener for Mr Robert Clarke, the owner of "Oakhurst", a mansion built in Walthamstow in 1750. Mr Clarke had some enlargements made to the house on St Peters Place for Frederick, including a new room large enough for the whole family to be seated around one big table. During the first World War Frederick started to work for the "Caribonum Company", a typewriter factory. His daughter Olive (our Auntie Olive) later also worked at this factory. |
