William Elvy and Sarah Bates

William and Sarah married at St Mildred's Church in Canterbury.  They had nine children.  In 1841 and 1851 they were living in Newham, Kent.

William was baptised on 21 March 1790.  It is probable that William's butcher's shop was that inherited in 1786 by his grandfather John from his brother Jeremiah.

Occupation: When her husband William died in 1831 aged 41, Sarah had to earn a living for her family.  Before 1841 she was a preseptress (midwife) in Newnham.  Later, probably between 1855 to 1859, she was governess of the Park House Boarding School.
Sarah was born in Newnham.  At the Census of 1871 Sarah was living at Highgate.

Ann was baptised on 20 January 1822.  At the censuses of 1841, 1851, and 1861 she was recorded as spinster living in Newnham.

Sophia was baptised on 26 October 1823.  At the time of the census of 1841, she lived in Greenstreet, Teynham and in 1849 she lived at Week Street, Maidstone.

Occupation: Thomas was a wine merchant.
Thomas Elvy was born in Newnham, Kent.  He was a wine merchant at the company "Marshall & Elvy", situated at 474 New Oxford Street in London. His younger brother John and Thomas's son Thomas William probably also started working as wine salesmen in this company.  Thomas first lived at Battersea in London, then at 1 Singapore Villas in Ealing, and later at Copley Lane, Uxbridge Road in Ealing.  He left will.

Mary had a twin brother John.  They were born less than a month after the funeral of their father.   At the census of 1841, Mary lived in Newnham.  In 1851 she was living in Naconham.

Occupation: John was a Commercial Traveller, a tea dealer, and a Master Tailor.  In 1881 he was a Traveller in beers, wines and spirits.  For some time he was also a cigar merchant with "Mullet & Elvy" at 4 Catherine Street, Seething Lane, London EC.
John Elvy had a twin sister Mary.  They were born less than a month after the funeral of their father.

John moved several times.  At the census of 1841 he lived in Newnam.  At the vensus of 1851 he lived in Milton, next to Gravesend, as a Grocer's assistant.  In 1861 he lived at 9 Pleasant Cottages in Hackney.  In 1863 he lived in Kingsland, Middlesex.  In 1865 he was back in Hackney.  In 1872 he had moved to Stoke Newigton in Middlesex.  By 1881 he was back in Hackney, at 82 Shacklewell Lane, St. John's Parish.  In 1885 he lived at 244 Amhurst Road and in 1898 at 8 Mount Pleasant Lane, Upper Clapton.
