In 1908 Edmund Elvy invited his cousin Lud, then aged 18, and his family to come to America on the Lusitania  They then went by train west to Los Angeles, California, and then on to Weed, California.  From there they went by horse-drawn wagon to reach the family homestead in Siskiyou County, California, near the Oregon border where they settled, raised wheat and improved the property.  Edmund aparently had intended to leave his fortune to Lud, however, late in life he married Alice and it appears his widow took the fortune, leaving Lud only $1,000 instead of the intended $84,000.  Alice Elvy then gave it all to her nephew, a lawyer, back East.
