Dated January 1st 1880, the front face of this medal says it is from the "United States of Colombia". The rear face says"Inauguration of the Definitive Studies for the Opening of the Interoceanic Canal from Colón to Panama by Count Ferdinando de Lesseps". It is not known whether this medal was given to Justus as a commemorative gift or awarded to him in honour.
